During late 2016, the North American Research Partnership was asked to collaborate in the first Arizona-Sonora Environmental Strategic Plan. In June 2016, the Environment and Water Committee of the Arizona-Mexico Commission/Comisión Sonora-Arizona agreed to produce this plan in order to enhance synergies and maximize the effective use of resources. This plan is the latest effort in a long history of cross-border collaboration involving bilateral, federal, state and local agencies, as well as the private sector and non-governmental organizations in Arizona and Sonora.
NARP was asked to provide research on economic competitiveness and the environment for the plan as well as coordinating the writing, editing and production of the plan, which comprises fifteen strategic projects and 14 additional projects in the areas of water, air quality, waste management and wildlife.
In addition to the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality and the State of Sonora Ecology and Sustainable Development Commission, NARP collaborated with the Arizona Game and Fish Department, the State of Sonora Water Commission, the Arizona Department of Water Resources, the Border Environment Cooperation Commission, and the North American Development Bank in building the strategic plan, which will be in effect between 2017 and 2021.
